Held each year in July, NAIDOC Week celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. The 2023 theme – ‘For Our Elders’ – calls us to recognise and celebrate our Elders in all that they do for our communities.

Our Elders are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones. They guide our generations and pave the way for us to take the paths we can take today and their tenacity and strength has carried the survival of our people. We pay our respects to the Elders we’ve lost and to those who continue fighting for us.

To celebrate NAIDOC Week 2023, join us at the Art Gallery of New South Wales for a special Art After Hours on 5 July featuring focus tours, artist talks, and a one-off music performance from rock legends No Fixed Address.

Families can drop into an art-making workshop between 3 and 8 July, inspired by artists and Elders Trudy Inkamala and Marlene Rubuntja, or join a NAIDOC Week storytime session in our children’s library on Friday 7 July.

Explore the diverse work of Aboriginal artists on display throughout the Art Gallery, including in the Yiribana Gallery in our North Building and a record-breaking 38 works in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes in our South Building.

All events are free, as is entry to the Art Gallery and most displays and exhibitions. You’ll need to buy a timed ticket to see Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2023.
