My body of work represents the age-old story of students not always sharing their teacher’s passion for the classics. I asked members of our drama class to model Desdemona and Othello, encouraging them to ‘ham it up’ so I could create a whimsical take on the idea of Shakespearean tragedy. My technique relies on both gradations and contrasts of tone using willow charcoal sticks, compressed charcoal and charcoal pencil. I used a paper stub and an electric eraser for blending and highlighting.
