Lucy Baer Erasure removes the artist's mark - so, is this drawing?
My work explores the concept of erasure, but further questions artistic assumptions by challenging the very nature of drawing. The unpredictable process of aggressively ripping off the tape removes details from the drawing, thus challenging the preconception that drawing is based on precision, realism and structure. The idea of applying and removing the tape in this way, and the use of chiaroscuro, were inspired by the works of Bill Henson. Through this abstraction of the figures the audience is forced to reach their own artistic conclusions (independent of rigid cultural predispositions) and to establish a personal sequential narrative and interpretation.
